but for regular riders likezene a thomas news that a passenger was attacked while waiting at the station is of great concern. >> that's really unfortunately. i'm sorry to hear that. >> reporter: the 47-year-old san jose man was waiting on the southbound platform at 7:30 p.m. on friday evening, that's wendell train officials say a group of 9 to 15 assailant attacked and robbed the man. the suspects were gone by the time police arrived. >> maybe they need to have more security around here that time of night because you know things like that can keep happening and shouldn't happen to people. >> reporter: as a result of the attack the san mateo department's police bureau has stepped up patrols at the redwood station. there were 10 felony and misdemeanor arrests on trains and platforms in january of this year. there were 103 arrests in 2010, and 104 in 2009. regular riders like ibrahim deba bow say they have seen

plenty of trouble in the redwood city station. >> there is a lot of people around here who like to start random conflicts, just like down there, just from people arguing. >> reporter: cal train passenger courtney zoback says she is always paying attention. >> there is always something to look out for for everybody, you should always look around at your surroundings, you know. >> reporter: but other riders say they never have any problems on cal train. >> the only thing i look around for is the train, not for persons, because they are like pretty cool. >> reporter: now as for the investigation they say they are looking for persons of interest in this case, investigators also asking anyone who may have been on the platform and seen this attack in progress to step forward. reporting live redwood city, mark sayier, cbs5. new details tonight. in a widening drug scandal in contra costa county we're learning about stephen trey natty who is arrested along with a top narcotics officer

and an investigator who are accused of selling drug evidence. the latest suspect may be linked to a separate scheme. ann? >> reporter: oscar tanabe is out on bail, so they are not under the usual time constraints of filing charges within 48 hours. it could be next month before we see the officer in court. stephen tanabe was arrested on suspicion of possession and transfer of an assault rival and conspiracy to sell substances, he is is a sheriff's deputy who works as a police officer. they say tanabe's arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation into the state department of juts central contra costa narcotics team. last month the team leader and a private investigator were arrested on charges of selling drugs. >> but now that we're getting other information about other officers perchance being

involved it goes complicate it. >> reporter: he represents curtis. he says his client was only involved with butler, no one else. >> i look at that investigative agency as the hub of this. and out from that come different spoke. >> reporter: one of those spoke according to the san francisco chronicle involves officer tanabe responsible for two arrests made near a bar. car does a was in court last friday when the prosecutor alleged men in contested divorces and custody battles were being settle up by the private investigator. >> and someone comes up with the idea "well, let's get your husband a d.u.i. and the court will be less likely to give the children to him." >> reporter: the claim is that butler would have the men meet someone for drinks and the police would be called when he left the bar.

the question is whether or not officers were paid for the d.u.i. arrest. the public defender told cbs5 that even if this ends up being true it's not clear if the d.u.i.s should be dismissed. >> this case on a general level seems to be developing different layers. the common threat seems to be the antioch police department. all ex-antioch police officers. i can imagine anybody that is an ex-antioch police officer is going to be looked at. >> reporter: welsh has cooperated with investigators but car does a says he doesn't know if there are more officers involved and if there can be more arrests. did he give you information leading to other officers. >> no, since we have been involved he hasn't given them any more information. that's not saying we wouldn't if they come to us but, as of now, no, we haven't. >> reporter: there are already 8 drug cases in the county that could be impacted by this arrest. one of those cases goes to court tomorrow and she may ask to have those charges dropped against this man. at this point she is not sure

if that man's case has been tainted. ann notarangelo, cbs5. the san francisco public defender's office has released another surveillance video in its review of drug busts by plainclothes officers. the video shows a man in a distinctive dark jacket entering the henry hotel. officers said they observed that man with drugs in his jacket but, according to the police report, the drugs were found in the man's white an tan jacket. as a result of that discrepancy charges were later dismissed. the plainclothes unit has been suspended while the f.b.i. and other agencies investigate allegations of misconduct. a bay area soldier has been killed in action leaving behind a pregnant wife and a young son. army staff sergeant mark wells of san jose died in afghanistan on saturday. his family says he stepped on a hidden bomb while disarmling another explosive device. the 31-year-old also served in iraq. he used to play the bagpipes at funerals of fellow soldiers.

wells attended lee high school. well it's not even spring break but in san mateo county parents were willing to stand in line to get their kids into a top school next year. >> never wait in line to even go see a concert. i said it's not worth it. but getting my kid into kindergarten. >> they started camping out at 3:00 yesterday afternoon to register their kids for cypriany elementary school. it's a public school but it has a limited number of open spots, the superintendent says the number of students in that district has jumped by 800 in just the last four years. they weren't the only ones camping out this weekend. more than two dozen people hungry for a chance to join san francisco's food truck revolution lined up to apply for permits, new rules took effect today making it easier and cheaper for food truck operators to set up their businesses. >> i mean we're new so the fact that it's cheaper and we can apply for more locations, it's huge, huge opportunity for us.

tonight, over leash laws. te proposed restrictions couldp pets away from s dog lovers are sounding off tonight over leash laws. the proposed restrictions could keep pets away from some popular parks in san francisco in the north bay. simon perez at fort mason as to how they'll show solidarity with their pets. simon. >> reporter: a group of pet owners adamant about letting their pets run free are showing up here at fort mason. they are not happy that the park service wants them to keep a leash on their dogs more often. a blustery day at kristi field didn't stop canines from

getting in a good sniff. but how much opportunity they to have check out their play buddies may change. they have several proposals to limit where dogs can run off- leash in the golden gate national recreation area which runs from port stun section to citizen on beach in marin county. >> we have had a major increase in the number of visitors to the park of all kind, including people who like to enjoy the park with their dogs, and we have had conflicts arise around that. >> reporter: here are some of the proposed changes. dogs are pretty well allowed all around port tungsten. they are all 0 so limbed to the areas. this is areas where dogs shouldn't be doing anyway say the cliff side. they are allowed off even in the northern and southern ends, the areas shaded red. the proposal would eliminate the southern end. the off-leash area is at the northern end shaded yellow. this is kristi field now, off leash everywhere in red. limit it to the yellow area,

the middle of the air field and the central beach. >> we don't have back yards in san francisco. we use the g again ray and ocean beach as our back yard. it's a place where we go to rec' reate. >> reporter: the park service says it must balance many different interests and, by law, it must come up with a plan that -- >> balance uses, protected resources, minimize conflicts, and is understandable by the public. >> reporter: not good enough for the dog lovers. >> there really isn't a lot of justification. there is a lot of dog might do this, could do that, they puget do, but there's not really any evidence that dogs do much of the problems they are talking about. >> reporter: so to be the the event is just really an open house where anybody would wants to can come in and talk to the national park service representative about what they think of the plan. the plan is not going to go into effect until the end of next year so there is still a ways to go. if you want to throw in your 2 cents the meeting goes on until 8:00 tonight here at fort

mason. simon perez, cbs5. some other bay area headlines for you tonight. strong wind caused this small sailboat to drag anchor in the bay ended up smacking against the san mateo bridge this afternoon, it hit one of the bumpers there along the bridge, fortunately nobody on board, nobody hurt. in the east bay a nasty crash snarled highway traffic for miles. several cars smashed into each other in the southbound lanes of 880, near a street and hayward. it happened just before 11:00 this morning. no word on how many people were hurt or how bad their injuries are. but police blocked off the left lanes of southbound 880 for almost an hour while they cleared that crash. police re-opened all lanes just before noon. charlie sheen goes on another televised rant but has he gone too far? what warner brothers now says about the future of his show "two and a half men." gwyneth paltrow and lady gaa swear by it. but is it leave them for the babies. >> a diet plan of just baby

salsalito, westerly 17, gusting to 34, out and about this evening, carry an umbrella to be on the safe sized. we have recollectione gate precipitation in front of the bulk of the system. but the bottom line is we do have temperatures into the 50s, a bit of a breeze dialing back later on tonight with partly to mostly cloudy skies, temperatures into the 40s and into the 50s. now we do have a cloud shield associated with this warm front moving in the bay area. producing some of those scattered showers. now anything we do see, it's way back here still, so we'll pretty much arrive in the overnight hours. primarily north of the golden gate bridge. and it will be murder in maybe a couple of ten this is, that's built. tomorrow partly to mostly cloudy. lingering shower, numbers pretty much where they should be, upper 50s, low 60s, 65 for the warm spot. check out wednesday. the warmest day of the workweek, 75 in santa cruz.

code. soon it won't just be 408. silicon valley is getting a whole new area code. 669 is going to be rolled out later this year. that is because santa clara county is running out of phone numbers primarily because so many people have cell phones. the public utilities commission will determine who gets the new area code. >> i think it would be all right because if you say 408 that could be anywhere in, like, really. so you know, like, help, you know, point out where people live. >> you have to look at japan, the highest area for local calls, if your rate is going to go up or down.
